After suffering a severe injury, it’s natural to run into an internal dilemma based on the physical and mental toll associated with an injury. Despite feeling like you are alone or you’ll never be the same, this is far from the case. There are several recommendations for successfully returning to exercise after a devastating injury.
Routine: It is important to have a set time or schedule to dedicate to rehab. Without a consistent schedule or set timeframe, it will be more difficult to stay on a consistent course.
Lose the Ego: Another crucial recommendation is losing whatever ego you had before the injury. The worst thing you can do is rush through rehab. This can lead to reinjury or overcompensation to another body part.
Celebrate the Small Wins: Celebrate your progress throughout rehab by keeping note of different checkpoints. Small steps are pieces in the puzzle of a large goal. This allows you to have motivation throughout and bring sight to the light at the end of the tunnel.
Ride the Lows: It is important to not hide your feelings when down or unmotivated but to also share a level of acceptance that there will be tougher days.
Support System: Accept help and talk to family and friends during this time. Asking for help does not make you weak! It is also a good idea to embrace hobbies to take your mind off of grueling rehab.
Trust the Process: Have faith that your body will do everything it can to return to pre-injury form
